301 and 404 cleanup for an IT company site

We went through 800+ rows of 301 and 404 reports: of 285 “broken” links only 24 were real. We fixed the rest without hosting or database access.

The task

An SEO audit showed hundreds of redirects and “broken” links. The client needed to know which of them were real problems and fix them — without access to hosting or the database.

Before

  • beforeA report with 525 rows of 301 redirects and 285 rows of 404s.
  • beforeNo clear idea what to fix first: everything looked like an emergency.
  • beforeAccess only to the WordPress admin — no hosting, no database.

What we did

  1. Grouped the reports by target: 158 unique URLs in the 301 report and 214 in the 404 report.

  2. Checked every target and found that 237 “errors” were 403 responses from anti-bot protection on external sites, not broken links.

  3. Isolated the real 404s — only 24 of them.

  4. Found that 84 redirects came from the theme’s pagination template, not from content.

  5. Fixed internal links in content and menus that pointed to old slugs.

  6. Did everything through the WordPress admin and REST API, with no hosting or database access.
